In August, we invited readers to take a brief survey about their training initiatives they face in the coming year, as well as tell us their information needs and interests. We are very appreciative of the many notes, encouragement and thoughtful input. We will use the responses of your peers to serve as an "editorial roadmap" of the types of articles we publish in WorkplaceXpert . Please click here for highlights of the survey results. Thank you for your feedback!

In addition to articles on hosting e-learning, characteristics of self-directed learners and the role of CLO's, this month's edition of WorkplaceXpert addresses the topic of ethics. When we introduced the topic last month, we received a lot of positive input on the importance of addressing this issue. Clearly, the topic is top of mind to many trainers and HR professionals as they seek ways to elevate the conversation in their own organizations. The pay-off for organizations is huge - the risks are equally significant. Failure to operate in an ethical manner will negatively impact any organization. Your organization cannot afford the loss of productivity, erosion of trust, decline in profits and negative impact on shareholder value. Conversely, a well-defined and communicated code of ethics can be the compass to improved success and ROI.

We are delighted to continue to offer training and HR professionals this newsletter free of charge. (WorkplaceXpert is not a Website - although it acts like one.) You have to subscribe to continue to receive WorkplaceXpert! If you have not yet signed up, please
click here and submit the registration form. If you have subscribed, please forward this to an associate who would value the content.

As always, thank you for your involvement and continued dedication to training!

Ethics Is For EVERYONE
By Eric Harvey and Scott Airitam

You read about it in the papers; you hear about it on the evening news; it's plastered on industry publications and legal journals. Almost everyone is talking about it - almost everywhere you turn, it's front page news.
The "it" is ETHICS ... and it has quickly become today's most critical business concern.
Look around. It seems as though for every organization or individual receiving an ethics award, there's another being charged with some type of impropriety. And this has led more than a few to conclude that we're right in the middle of an ethics and integrity crisis - as businesses ... and as a society. "Why else," they contend, "would we create ethics departments, ethics officers, codes of conduct, and the like?" And to a degree, they're right. LEARN MORE

Doing the Right (Organizational) Thing
By Marlene Caroselli

So common is the breach of ethics by individuals and organizations in whom we have placed our soon-to-be-jaded trust that our language is creating new words to express our common revulsion: "executake" is now bandied about in lieu of "executive." And, "institutional betrayal" denotes the destruction of faith that we once placed, without question, in organizations such as police forces, schools, churches and bureaucratic organizations. As a nation, we are in the midst of an identity crisis, redefining the rules that once governed us individually and collectively.LEARN MORE

Invisible Assets: 6 Characteristics of Self-Directed Workers
By Gerry Sexton, M.D.

Life as a trainer would be so much better if only we could figure out what it is that makes self-directed learners self-directed...and how to put that stuff in a bottle. Imagine. No worrying about making training stick. No meltdowns with participants who would prefer a root canal to a role-play. No more selling training to management
.

I've wrestled with this fundamental question the last decade as a trainer, consultant and knowledge seeker myself. I've come up with six characteristics - invisible assets - I believe distinguish those who successfully take personal responsibility for their learning and careers. LEARN MORE
Hosting the e-learning party
B
y Clive Shepherd

With the economic downturn hitting IT particularly hard, it has become increasingly difficult to get enterprise-wide software strategies off the ground.
