Blended Learning White Paper for Smaller Companies

Dear Readers,

Training and learning departments have a universal need to deliver results on the tasks that make a difference to their organization. This requires a clear understanding of the organization’s needs, direction and of course, the resources available.

Training objectives and needs will change from year to year – we know that new management, practices, staff and innovations will influence these needs.

We need to analyze shifting situations, adapt approaches and set a course to meet the changing needs of the organization.  There are different types of learners in every organization and adapting to those styles and needs may be our biggest challenge.

The New CLO: Developing Success
By Oliver W. Cummings

“Know me, know my business” is a refrain that should be known, absorbed and emblazoned in the brains and actions of every CLO. This appeal applies equally to the corporate business being served and to the business of the learning function.  A challenge for new CLOs is to identify the learning function’s business in the context within their new companies. The first step is to ask a set of key questions. How well these questions are answered and integrated will significantly affect the CLO’s decision-making process, effectiveness and path to success. Learn More

Cultivating an Innovative Culture
By Peter Adebi

Executives must create a culture that overcomes barriers to innovation. To succeed, organizations must be able to thrive in a culture of rapid and constant change. HR executives need to foster cultures that offer a common language, foster experimentation and mix the right talent. The brightest business ideas and strategies will fail or yield suboptimal results in an obstructive culture. Learn More

Using Technology to Connect with Different Types of Learners
By Jim Endicott, Owner/Manager of Distinction

I seek out opportunities to present whenever I can. For some that's a pretty crazy concept. Kind of like carrying a stick out into the woods to whoop up on a brown bear. It's no fun for the bear and I'm guessing it wouldn't be any picnic for you either. I've found, however, that the art of presenting can only be refined through practice, trying new things and learning some lessons the hard way. Learn More

Another Life: Virtual Worlds as Tools for Learning
By Jay Cross, Tony O'Driscoll and Eilif Trondsen

Are virtual worlds a breakthrough technology that will forever reshape learning and business? Or are they this season's over-hyped fad? You'd have to try very hard to avoid exposure to the virtual world phenomenon in America these days. From "South Park's" hilarious episode on "World of Warcraft" (the world's largest MMORG, or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) to Business Week's cover article in April, and with coverage on "Good Morning America," "CBS Sunday Morning" and countless other shows, virtual worlds appear to be the new-new thing.

Leading Technical Professionals: A Challenging Equation

Start with 1 team of engineers, add 1 engineer-turned-manager, multiply by a list of assignments to the 10th power, divide by the time frame for achieving results, and there you have it – an equation that describes what it's like to lead one of the most complex and critical populations in the workforce today – technical professionals. We have spent nearly 20 years researching and working with technical professionals and their leaders, and our latest study indicates that the solution for more effective leadership, although complex, delivers significant rewards. Learn More
