As we prepare to turn the page on the calendar and begin a new year, we wish to thank all our subscribers for your ongoing support of  WorkplaceXpert. We are very proud and pleased with the positive feedback and encouragement you have provided since we launched the newsletter in May. We eagerly look forward to next year, providing you easy access to some of the best thinking on training and HR management.

During the past year, readers have told us what they need and value in terms of information that will help them in their jobs. They have told us very clearly that 2002 was a year where precious resources needed to be carefully allocated to develop and deliver valuable content in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible. The need for quality training has never been greater, nor has the need to measure and demonstrate training's effectiveness and value to the organization been more critical.

This month we focus on a number of key issues readers have identified as challenging the training and HR manager.

ROI on a Shoestring: Evaluation Short-Cuts for Resource-Constrained Environments
By Holly Burkett

Despite the heightened emphasis on accountability of HRD programs, many organizations are deterred from comprehensive measurement and evaluation due to concerns about the cost, time, and human resources necessary to fully implement the process.

In resource-constrained, just-in-time business environments - where many professionals are increasingly charged to do more with less - there are special challenges to proving an intervention's bottom-line value. Yet the lack of results based information often causes the reduction or elimination of training resources when resource reallocation within the organization takes place. LEARN MORE

Learning Objects 101: A Primer for Neophytes
By Glenn Millar

Ask any three trainers what a learning object is, and you're liable to get three different answers. For some, learning objects-small reusable chunks of learning-represent a major paradigm shift away from the traditional unit of learning that has dominated formal education for the last two centuries-the course. In its place, we will erect monolithic databases that can be searched in the blink of an eye to create discrete learning that is highly flexible, individualized, and personally relevant.

For others, learning objects are just a fancy new handle for something that teachers have been doing for years-sharing. The discussion, dare we say debate, has been underway for years and is likely to continue for some time to come. LEARN MORE

Ten Things to Consider about E-Learning before Spending a Dime
By MariAn Klein

During the last ten years, there has been a perceptible rise, indeed some would say an explosion, in the creation and implementation of e-learning programs, software, and courses in corporations and universities across the globe. While there are many reasons why organizations consider using technology to deliver and/or support training, one of the key reasons e-Learning continues to gain momentum and popularity is the hope that using technology will reduce overall training costs. From needs analysis to review and approval, the author's ten tips (each with at least a half-dozen sub-elements) can serve as your checklist for covering all the steps in designing an e-learning program.

Oftentimes those designing e-learning programs place too much emphasis on technology and neglect to follow design standards for producing high quality programs. When designing your e-learning programs, keep the following tips in mind. LEARN MORE

5 Essential Storytelling Tips
By Jim Endicott

You may think you're out selling a unique product or service but you're not. You might even think you're trying to persuade a new strategic partner or out raising venture capital but that's not the whole story. At its very essence, every presentation is simply a well-told story. Yeah, there's a point to your story but your ability to connect with your audience, hold their attention, illustrate the storyline and master the necessary body mechanics has everything to do with whether you close the deal or get the dough.
