The Pygmalion Effect: Managing the Power of Expectation, third edition, DVD
Review by Ursula Mannix
CRM Learning (800-421-0833, www.crmlearning.com), $995.
CRM Learning, a leading publisher of video-based training programs for the last 20 years, has reintroduced to audiences in both education and business the phenomenon known as the Pygmalion Effect. The Pygmalion Effect: Managing the Power of Expectation, third edition, expertly illustrates how managers' perceptions of the ability of subordinates, negative or positive, affects how they perform. It also demonstrates how to harness this relationship for improved performance.
In the video, training audiences get a comprehensive overview of the Pygmalion Effect through real-life examples and realistic vignettes. In an interview new to this edition, Dr. Robert Rosenthal provides insight into how expectations affect behavior. Also new to this edition is the “Expectation Cycle,” which outlines how expectations are formed, communicated, adopted, and reinforced.
The video profiles the Dunn-Edwards Paints Corporation to illustrate the impact and results of incorporating the principles of the Pygmalion Effect in an organization’s culture. It introduces the Pygmalion Developmental Plan, a formal step-by-step action plan that facilitates transfer of learning into daily work environments.
The leader guide describes the effect and research on it as well as three suggested training designs. Other related self-fulfilling behaviors are also identified, and companion videos are listed as a follow-up.
PowerPoint slides enhance and reinforce the main discussion topics of the videos. The 10 participant workbooks are interactive and a reference for continuing and maintaining the principles taught in training sessions. Also provided are 10 reminder cards.
Recommendation:
This training tool provides clear and practical strategies and an action for exploiting the Pygmalion Effect to achieve positive outcomes. If your organization is committed to improving performance and increased productivity, The Pygmalion Effect belongs in your training resource library.
Overall rating: 3.5
Note: ratings use a four-point scale, with 4.0 the highest rating and 1.0 the lowest.
