AmerICANs for Nuclear Abolition

Those who continue to think that only left-leaning politicians and NGOs advocate the abolition of nuclear weapons might be surprised to learn that two prominent Americans with impeccable conservative credentials have called for just that. In an October 4 letter to Hoover Institution Fellow George P. Shultz (himself, along with Henry Kissinger, now a declared abolitionist), former First Lady Nancy Reagan thanked her late husband's Secretary of State for "the new effort to rid the world of nuclear weapons." Mrs. Reagan said "It was always Ronnie's dream that the world would one day be free of nuclear arms. …[He] said these are 'totally irrational, totally inhumane, good for nothing but killing, and possibly destructive of life on earth.'" At the same Hoover Institution conference where Mrs. Reagan's letter was read, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had this to say:

"Neither can this nation nor the world wait to act until there is a nuclear disaster. I am so thankful for the work of George [Shultz], Bill Perry, Henry Kissinger, Sam Nunn, Max Kampelman, Sid Drell and so many of you at this conference. You have a big vision, a vision as big as humanity—to free the world of nuclear weapons."

On the other side of the US political spectrum, Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has told American voters that he is "dedicated to building a nuclear-free world.  I believe we should lead by our own example, stop further testing and development, and demonstrate our credibility by beginning to reduce our own arsenal.  By taking these steps, I believe we will be in a much stronger position to lead an international effort to build a nuclear free world."

As a non-partisan organization, IPPNW welcomes these expressions of support for the abolition of nuclear weapons from across the political spectrum of the world's most powerful nuclear weapons state.  SUPPORT THIS PROJECT
